SensorPlanet

SensorPlanet is a Nokia-initiated cooperation, a global research framework, on mobile device-centric large-scale Wireless Sensor Networks.

The results of SensorPlanet are 1) a test platform that enables the collection of sensor data on a never seen scale, and 2) a central repository for sharing the collected sensor data for research purposes.

The underlying idea is that participating universities develop their own applications on e.g. environment and traffic monitoring, urban and participatory sensing, wellness and navigation applications, etc. and share the collected data in order to conduct research on data analysis and mining, visualisation, machine learning, etc. Furthermore, it is our goal to develop novel application ideas and use cases based on the learning and the research.

Objectives

Strengthen mobile device-centric Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) research, establish a new field within WSN.
Establish an open source community around Wireless Sensor Networks.
Provide a forum for publishing early results.

Accelerate concept innovation and finding of new application areas.
Create an ecosystem for industry and academia collaboration.

Enable research groups to design and implement large scale experiments.
Facilitate creation and sharing of large data sets.

Study future interaction modes for accessing sensor data.
Develop novel abstraction and visualisation methods for user friendly interaction.
Investigate ways of fusion methods where different sources provide different type of data on various level of granularity and semantics.
